Edgewater Life
Made it to the Selby Bay Marina
Wednesday, May 19 anchored just to the starboard of the Marina at Edgewater, Selby Bay, and pulled to the fuel dock around 9am the next morning. The sunrise is spectacular! We are too late for John’s birthday, but we are here safely.
Making Friends over Sea Stories and Grougue
A wonderful couple, Mike and Sharon were docked in front of us on the Monarch, from Maine. They offered to pick us up anything we needed at the store - they were just leaving. Frank Weber is the owner and is also a Worcester Polytechnic Institute grad, He spends time now between the marina and teaching at the Naval Academy in Annapolis. Annapolis is only about 5 nautical miles away, but Edgewater is semi-rural.
Carlos shared the Cape Verdean Grogue with our neighbors, the owner and everyone is friends now. Many sea and boat stories - Mike and Sharon had an apartment in Edgewater and spend their winters here. Frank was intrigued with the 617 area code when I called, which is one reason why he chose to accommodate us!! I guess I will work hard to keep that cell number since it's such a unique and recognizable area code.
Basic accommodations - perfect location
Overall the marina is in need of attention, but it is clean and it has everything that we needed. The typical slots are too small for the catamaran, but the fuel dock was fine (they don’t get a lot of fuel customers just now). Our only requirement was to be out by Memorial Day - not a problem since we wanted to be in RI by then.
While David worked, we cleaned the boat, then walked to the liquor store and ordered some Indian food. Slept like babies.
Must stay in touch with Mike, Sharon and Frank - possibly a written note with our cards in it or Christmas Cards. They could also be encouraged to subscribe through our website.
Enjoying the family in Washington DC
On Friday, May 21 Gizele picked us up, and we brought all the dirty clothes, plus David packed for an appointment. We spent the evening at John's T ball game and eating salmon, great getting to know the kids and the grandkids again.
Packed house for a couple of nights, but all is fun. Saturday May 22 swam in the million dollar house pool. What an extraordinary house, like David said, if we have to think about how we would accomplish it, we can't afford it. We got into conversation about Gram’s house - that’s another discussion!
Sunday, May 23 We are on Bubista for a short motoring trip around the bay with pizza and chips and wine.
Love the time with the kids, but it's a long ride to Edgewater, still closer to their house than Annapolis. David is off to the hotel. We will see him on Tuesday, boarding just before we depart.
Getting Ready for departure
Monday, May, 24 did the usual at the house: breakfast, dress into work clothes, clean up bedrooms. Went for a nice walk through DC parks. The Old Walter Reed Hospital site. That place is going to be so nice, it would nice to have a part of it. It will be great once the apartment is finished.
We said our goodbyes to the family and Uber’d back to Edgewater, however, the tide had come up, Since the fuel dock was not a floating dock, the lines had lost all slack. Thankfully, Frank was at the boat, giving slack on the lines. We need to be more conscious about what will happen when we are away from the boat for long periods of time, and whether or not the dock is a floating dock.
Heading out for the final stretch home
Tuesday May 25 After cleaning up, we said bye to Sharon and Mike sharing emails, then departed Selby bay around 830am. Have to pass Annapolis and Baltimore to get to the C&D canal, over to the Delaware River. River and out around Cape May to the Atlantic. It's gloomy but the waters are calm at least for now. Sun came up, and the jib was raised and the sail is beautiful. Entered the C and D canal Chesapeake and Delaware canal, at 5pm, first of five bridges, Chesapeake city Bridge, which, which was 140 foot clearance at 520 summit bridge at 545. That was a beautiful blue bridge. There was a cable crossing sign that we went over, or point passed at 550 Conrail bridge at 558. William V Roth, JR bridge at 612, St George's bridge at 615 Ready point bridge at 630, make great speed around eight to nine knots, timing with the current was perfect. Yay for Carlos. Now we are back in the Atlantic in the pounding resumes, We should be in Cape May by 4am.
